Feeding

Working from the idea of food diversity for dogs we enriching their diet with varied proteins, textures (kibble, wet, raw, toppers), and fresh ingredients to boost gut health, provide complete nutrients, prevent boredom, potentially reduce allergies, and support overall immunity, moving beyond single-protein processed foods for a more balanced, microbiome-rich diet, with benefits seen even from adding small amounts of fresh food.

Food is Key

What should I feed my dog and how do I keep it affordable and convenient?

Knowing what to feed your dog can be confusing and complicated. So many choices and brands. Kibble, raw, etc. . . The bottom line is there are definitely foods that are better than others and it's not always easy to tell.

Let's start with raw food; perhaps the best nutritionally for your dog but it can be more challenging to store and can be more expensive. The choices are endless and some raw is better then others.

Some people do DIY but it takes a lot of knowledge to know how to get the correct nutrition to correctly feed your dog.

These are the two biggest issues I see with raw is keeping pathagenge and contamination down and any time you buy a human grade item the pathagenges are higher due to the assumption that it will be cooked. The second hurdle is to make sure it is balanced. Now I don't eat a fully balanced meal every day but over the corse of a month or two I get close and if I'm short on something my body tells me. Dogs can't so balancing every meal is a headache and balancing over a month is a challenging.

This is where the we are most of the time we serve soft cooked home food. We have a wonderful butcher just down the street who makes a dog food with the stuff he couldn't sell in time to people and thus we pick up about 5 pounds every week and add other good stuff in seasonal pupmkin during fall and zucchini during summer. Then we feed kibble and the home made at the same time.

So now to kibble, look close at the ingredients. The top ingredients should be meat and or meat meal. Not grain or by-product. Corn is also a common ingredient and it's mainly a filler and cheap ingredient and not very digestible. Be aware of sneaky tricks companies do to fake you out. brands also like to change ingreadance and don't have to say any thing. At least once a year roll that bag over and double check things.

Too much grain can cause inflammation, which leads to all kinds of issues including cancers.  Too much soy can effect the thyroid and then dogs can become lethargic and over weight.

The bottom line is educate yourself and do your research, make sure you read labels and understand your dog's needs.
