Puppy Curriculum
Obedience
16-32

puppies enter a high-energy, "teenager" phase marked by teething, increased independence, and potential fear periods. Key obedience focus includes reinforcing basics (sit, stay, come), leash manners, and advanced socialization to manage distractions, with training. Consistent training is crucial to prevent behavioral regression. Labradors are known to be food motivated and our labradors aim to please in general.

16-32 weeks old

We recommend at this point to get involved with a puppy group there are many different ways - Petco's has training classes and days there are also amazing privet trainers around; below is our favorite gal Kim is amazing. Working in a class and or in a group can help hold the human accountable as well as can help highlight where some of the holes in the training might be.

  • 16-20 Weeks (Teething & Independence): Sore gums increase chewing habits. Puppies begin testing boundaries, exhibiting "selective deafness," and demanding more freedom.

Obedience Training Focus (16-32 Weeks)

  • Reinforce Basic Commands: Consistently practice sit, down, stay, and come with increased distractions.

  • Leash Manners: Formalize walking training to handle increased energy.

  • Recall Training: Use a long line to practice recall with high-distraction environments.

  • Socialization: Continued exposure to new people, dogs, and environments to manage potential fear periods.

  • Handling & Grooming: Acclimate the puppy to being brushed and having paws handled, which helps with future veterinary visits.

Tips for Success

  • Short Sessions: Utilize their longer attention span, but keep sessions engaging to avoid boredom.

  • Consistency: Do not reduce training, as they may seem to "forget" skills during this rebellious phase.

  • Positive Reinforcement: Use treats/meals and play to maintain positive associations, especially during fear periods.

  • Supervision: Maintain close supervision to prevent destruction and manage increased independence.
