Puppy Curriculum
Feed and Grow
Weeks 1-4
-
Eyes (10–14 days): Eyes do not open all at once; it is a gradual process that can take a day or two for both to fully open. Initial vision is blurry, and eyes may look cloudy.
-
Ears (14–21 days): Ear canals open slightly later than the eyes, generally by the end of the second week or beginning of the third.
-
So right now, the puppies' world is all about Mom and what we can smell.
Puppies rapidly transition from immobile, sensory-deprived newborns to curious explorers.
Early Neurological Stimulation =ENS Originally developed by the U.S. military's "Super Dog" project, ENS stimulates the neurological system by introducing mild stressors during a critical developmental window (3-16 days old). It is believed to prepare puppies for better performance and emotional resilience.
Benefits of ENS
-
Improved Cardiovascular Performance: Stronger heartbeats and heart rate.
-
Stronger Adrenal Glands: Increased production of necessary hormones.
-
Higher Tolerance to Stress: Better ability to handle challenging situations.
-
Stronger Immunity: Increased resistance to diseases.
-
Improved Problem-Solving: Faster learning and better performance in tests.
How to Perform the 5 ENS Exercises (Days 3-16)
Each exercise is performed for 3–5 seconds, once per day per puppy:
-
Tactile Stimulation: Using a Q-tip, gently stimulate/tickle the puppy between the toes on any one foot.
-
Head Held Erect: Hold the puppy with both hands, perpendicular to the ground, with the head directly above the tail.
-
Head Pointed Down: Hold the puppy securely with both hands, with the head pointing toward the ground.
-
Supine Position: Cradle the puppy on its back in the palms of both hands, muzzle toward the ceiling.
-
Thermal Stimulation: Place the puppy on a damp towel that has been in the refrigerator for at least 5 minutes. Allow the puppy to move, but do not restrain it.
Early Scent Introduction= ESI is a procedure conducted from days 3 to 16 of a puppy's life, designed to improve scent detection, enhance confidence, and boost olfactory awareness. It involves exposing puppies to a new, unique scent daily for 5 seconds to stimulate their developing brain. This training helps develop potential service, therapy, or working dogs.
Benefits and Goals
-
Increased Scent Ability: Enhances the ability to distinguish and recognize scents.
-
Improved Temperament: Leads to more alert, confident, and adaptable dogs.
-
Brain Development: Capitalizes on the high neuroplasticity in the first two weeks.
How to Perform ESI
-
Timing: Conduct daily from day 3 through day 16 of life.
-
Process: Hold a scented item (like leather, pine, citrus, duck, herbs) about 12 inch from the puppy’s nose for 5 seconds.
-
Observation: Note the puppy's reaction: positive (approaching/sniffing), neutral, or negative (turning away).
-
Handling: If a puppy tries to move away, do not force the scent closer.
