Training Theory
Mo Ghra labrador is proud to offer our puppies such a wonderful early learning program. We begin our curriculum with all of our puppies, regardless of whether their pup will be a gundog, detection dog, or simply a fantastic family pet.
Puppies are exposed to a variety of sights, sounds, socialization in addition to capturing the earliest learning time in a dog's life to introduce basic obedience, gundog behaviors, or search & rescue behaviors.
Our puppy program included with the purchase of your pup but is also dependent on you pick up date/ week
We do try to cardinalate weekend activities though out the summer and following fall - so that peer-pressure can help everyone learn canine and human alike!
Training Theory
Why we chose Labradors that are directly imported from Great Britain/Ireland or direct descendants from Labradors raised in Great Britain/Ireland? We often refer to the “On and Off” switch the British Labradors have. More specifically they are required to run hard toward game, both marked and blind retrieves during UK field trials. And also be very quiet, steady, and calm on the line. It requires a lot of patience from the dogs to keep steady and quiet while watching other dogs retrieve. Game-finding, or using their nose, is also of primary importance in a British or Irish trial. The British Labrador is generally around 45-75 pounds. Trials in the UK are actually a live hunt on various types of game, so no dog gets the exact same retrieve. We believe the traits and characteristics of British Labradors are more desirable when placing a dog in a home as a family hunting companion. This is why we breed UK imported Labrador Retrievers; it is easier to work with exceptional DNA and instincts than against.
At Mo Ghra labrador, we have dedicated years to breeding, raising, and training exceptional dogs. Through Absolutely Positively Gundog Training and others programs that we have intergraded; we are thrilled to extend our expertise to others. Our structured learning programs are rooted in real-world experience, blending proven training methods with a profound understanding of canine development and behavior. A big divide exists today in the in America. The opposing views are tradition-based compulsion training versus the science-based positive training model.
Puppy training is built on the science of learning theory, which explains how dogs form associations between stimuli, behaviors, and consequences to shape desired actions. Core Principles of Learning Theory are in Play theory.
Applying play Learning Theory to Puppy Training and they to working dogs
-
Start early – Puppies are most receptive to learning between 8 weeks and 12 months, making it ideal for applying these principles
-
Use clear cues and consistent rewards – This strengthens the association between the cue and the desired behavior.
-
Pair rewards with the exact moment of the behavior – Timing is critical for effective learning.
-
Gradually fade rewards – As the behavior becomes automatic, reduce the frequency of rewards to prevent overdependence.
-
Address unwanted behaviors – Use learning theory to help puppies unlearn negative associations (e.g., fear of the leash) by replacing them with positive ones.
-
Utilizing groups can be incredibly beneficial for both the pups and their human counter parts. When puppies learn from one another, they experience positive peer pressure that encourages them to try new things. Additionally, other handlers may notice techniques or approaches that can help you address any challenges pup is facing, offering alternative ways to teach steps. This collaborative environment fosters growth and learning for everyone involved
Why It Matters
Understanding learning theory helps trainers and owners communicate more effectively with puppies, create consistent training routines, and foster a strong, trusting relationship. It transforms training from guesswork into a predictable, science-backed process that works for both the puppy and the owner
